Meisterwerke is a project by Isabelle Torrelle and Christian Otto, who love to share their passion for art and textiles. Christian attends to the organisational tasks and Isabelle is responsible for the creative aspects. The creative mind behind Meisterwerke has a particularly rich journey through Flemish weaving. After obtaining a degree in Textiles from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, she worked for twenty years as a designer for manufacturers of furniture fabrics and decorative textiles. All through the years, however, she longed to get her teeth into something she felt really passionate about. The industry plays it too safe, Torrelle believes by sticking to the production of low cost textiles. “Flanders can certainly do with a bit more arrogance. Our DNA is rich with one of the most erudite weaving cultures to be found anywhere. In the Middle Ages, people came from far and wide to acquire our tapestries. We need to take more pride in our fame and continue to build on that flair, instead of producing textiles of low creativity just so that we can keep up with foreign competition.” Despite her successful career and her busy but comfortable life, Isabelle couldn’t go on that way: “At a certain point I’d just had enough. One day I just decided to quit, despite having no idea what exactly I wanted to do, or how I would approach things differently.” Gradually she started to see what she wanted to create. Every few weeks, she met with a group of friends and advisors – five women and a man – seeking support and encouragement for her ideas and to plan the route she was to take. They helped fire up her enthusiasm and inspiration, but also ensured she stayed realistic. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Old world traditions with a modern face Our love of art and textiles requires that we create unique and bespoke objets de désir. Every limited piece that we have created is designed, woven and embroidered ⎯ all while steeped in the grand tradition of Flemish artisanship and innovation. The time has come for slow living objects. We offer Acoustic Art and design that enhances every interior in a unique and artful way. Reducing the level of noise in our habitat is one of the biggest challenges we face today. Our room dividers and panels have the highest levels of sound absorption and noise control.
